What Would You Buy With A Spare $10,000!?!?

Man, I need to step my game up.

I dabble a little bit in photography. Okay, who am I kidding? I'm obsessed with photography. My son has to be the most thoroughly documented child in the history of the world evar. I've taken classes, and read dozens of books to hone my craft. I'm not Ansel Adams, but it's fair to say I've got an eye.

That said, as good as me and my little Panasonic Lumix are, sometimes when I'm perusing photo blogs, I run into another dude who's doin' sh*t so big, it makes me wanna just quit altogether and go back to those disposable jawns they sell at CVS.

Such is the case when I run across a site like RaleighSkyline, a photo blog dedicated to the belated[1], yet city-fication of my hometown. I know ya'll will probably peep the site and say "what's the big deal, it's just another Southern town that closes at 5pm?"

And you'd be correct, but darnit, just look at the clarity of these photos.

21.1 megapixels!!!!!

These photos are clearer than my eyesight. Jeez.

Good photography can make a three stoplight "downtown" look like Times Square. And yep, I'm jealous.

Gassed up, I started doing a Google search trying to figure out just how many of my Wizards Bobbleheads I'd need to hock to afford the batteries for a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III.

Uh, that would be about $7,999 worth of bobbleheads. I don't think I've got that many in the collection.

Needless to say, between this and that 150 inch plasma I'm feenin' for, I'm gonna need some ends. So, I need ya'll to start clicking through on those ads, coppin' a t-shirt, or droppin' somethin' in my PayPal commissary (link below on right).

Either that, or I'm gonna have to go back to hustlin'. Take your pick.

Since this post was completely pointless, and you and I both know I'll never drop $10k on a camera, I figured I'd flip the script and pose a question to you guys.

Question: If you had a $10,000 windfall, what completely frivolous item would you blow it all on? Two stipulations: you have to spend the money on yourself, and you cannot save or otherwise invest it.

I moved from Atlanta to Cary (the Raleigh 'burbs, for those of you that don't know) in 1984. I moved to the Washington area in 2001. The culture shock when I first moved to Raleigh was astounding. We went to the symphony one Saturday night, got out around 9:00, and started looking for a place to get a drink. At 9:00 on Saturday night in Raleigh, they had rolled up the sidewalks. In Atlanta, you could have an argument about which type of ethnic food you wanted at that hour. In those 17 years, Raleigh and Durham became MUCH more citified and friendly. It's a good place to live now. Enjoy.

Meh...

You still can't get alcohol after 12am in Atlanta (trust me us form up north tried to stock a party after 12am) and you still can't buy alcohol on Sunday. Not to mention, there are sometimes I'd kill for Starbucks after 11pm and there are no 24hr starbucks in that city.

But anywho...the question.

I'd sooooooo buy a new computer right NOW and just pray that this one would last long enough for me to transfer all my grad school documents onto it--and this would be a TOTAL Macintosh crossover. I'd drop the $1200 on a notebook, and drop the $200 or so on an iPhone. And prolly since I got the money, just go ahead and get an iPod as well.

So what, that leaves me with like $8,200. Hmmm, I might either look at buying a new car or actually save it so that when this one has a real big problem I'll have the money, or ya know just keep it as a vacation fund so that when I have fall break and spring break, I can always hop to my most favoritist city in the world Washington, D.C. and then for Christmas Break, and Spring Break I can hop to LA or Miami or some of the islands.

I live in one of those sleepy little southern towns and while you cannot buy alcohol after 2am (any day) or before noon on Sunday I have to say that things don't shut down around here until last call. So you can go out to a club any night and party until 2 am, strip clubs stay open later but you can't drink after 2 most restaurants close midnightish but there are exceptions that are either open 24hrs or open late. The best place on the planet to go around 2 or 3 in the morning is to Krispy Kreme, that's where I get my late night coffee fix.

As for the money, I'd probably spend the majority of it on my daughter(maybe take her on a trip somewhere,) there's always room for tattoos so I'd probably get a few of the showstopping variety, and put whatever is left aside for those times when I'm strapped for cash.

I would buy new gaming PC , and I would buy a new mac with the other part of that money, and an IPHONe, and a pair of freakum pumps.... (the hubby probably wouldn't know what hit him... I have been in mommmy mode too long. With the remaining money, I would go to my sorority's national conference this summer. As it stands now, it ain't gonna happen.

With 10K, I'd spend 2K and hit up the Rio beaches during Carnival. The most beautiful women in the world reside in Brazil. African booty and Spanish skin = perfection.

Plus, they are not afraid to show off the body.

@ gilahi

Raleigh is still a pretty sleepy burb by bigger city standards, but it's getting better. Everything there is so decentralized and spread out. The whole work-church-mall-eat dynamic is about as extensive as life gets there. I also think they missed the boat when they built their sports arena out by the fairgrounds. Putting it downtown would have been a real catalyst, but it was a missed opportunity they're just getting around to fixing.

Ruh roh. Bruh, you are about to get in some trouble. :)

Photography has been a lifelong hobby for me too and some say I have an eye. Having said that, megapixels will not give you the clarity you seek, but good glass will. Grab 2 stacks and cop an 85mm f1.4 or a 135mm f1.4. Thing is with 100MP but a crappy 18-80mm f3.5-5.6 you'll still get what you always got! Go rent one and try it out. Fast glass is really what's up if you want clarity. The MP race is mostly marketing.

The last 8g's gets spent funding the traveling that will allow me to take those photos that will finally get me published in National Geo baby!
