KMart Sucks!!!

I have an admittedly minor bone to pick.

Aylwin B. Lewis, CEO of Sears, has been on the job for only a couple of years now. One of the main reasons he was bought over from Yum! Brands was his out-of-the-box thinking. You know those ingenious KFC/Taco Bell/Pizza Hut all-under-one-roof fast food joints that allow you to get a 3 piece extra crispy, a burrito supreme, buffalo wings, and the necessary angioplasty all in a single trip? That was a black man's idea.

So, since I'm a Business Section Junkie, I was pretty intrigued when I heard Lewis was hired at Sears to not only redo their tired flagship stores, but also to breathe some new life into KMart, which is of course also owned by Sears. Here in DC, most of the KMart stores were closed when the company filed for bankruptcy a few years back. Since I prefer Target, I could really care less, but of course I want a black man to succeed. So, when I went into my local KMart for the first time in ages a few days ago to cop some remote control cars for AverageToddler, I was hoping for the best.

The results? Not exactly the best.

It's easy from my visit to see why KMart stays losing. The minute you walk in the store, you are literally bombarded by sheer masses of crap. There are piles of inventory literally clogging the aisles. There were rows after rows of unorganized crap just laying in the floor. I couldn't easily locate what I was there for, nor could I find anyone to help. Many of the lights in the store were simply out, so the place was uncomfortably dim in broad daylight. The store's free "Internet Cafe", an idea used to lure customers in, looked like a surefire haven for MySpace predators. Even in the largely affluent lily-white suburb where I happened to visit, KMart is still the bastion of trailerparkiness.

While I did eventually locate what I was looking for, once I got home, I opened the package to find out that not only had the RC car I bought been previously opened, it didn't even work. I returned the item, and should have bought my English-Spanish dictionary along for the trip. I have absolutely nothing against illegal immigrants, but just maybe there are some gigs, ie: customer support, that they just shouldn't be hired for. After a thoroughly confusing 30 minutes, I finally got my refund (straight cash, baybee) and got the hell outta there. Needless to say, next time I'm looking for toys for my kid, I won't head to KMart.

Aylwin B. Lewis, you got your work cut out for you, bruh.

Question: Do you have your own "KMart Sucks" story to share?

I hate K-Mart worse than Wal-Mart. And I HATE, HATE, HATE Wal-Mart. Heck, I wrote an essay about it...

...But K-Mart has NEVER done anything right. Their stores have the worst layouts, the worst displays. Their stores just look limp and raggedy.

Most of the K-Marts here in Georgia have pretty much closed. There is one in Marietta near where I live, but I REFUSE to go in there.

Remember the Cafes? Eating a hot-dog there was an invitation to Salmonella and E. Coli. My mom never let me eat there, and looking back, I thank her.

I used to work for Kmart in South Florida. They are walking lawsuits. The management we had were far from professional ..we lost those years ago. There is a guy who ran a busy store but tells the associates he is not afaraid to fire anyone whether they have 30 days or 30 years. They have been cutting hours for quite a while and yet this man said if these people want their job they will work when he wants whether they have had to get a second job or whatever. They actually were told by upper management to hire 100 part timers and do not give more than 15 hours a week. I am sure people line up to work at minium wage for 15 hours with gas nearing 4.00 a gallon. I have seen experienced long time employees cry and I have seen managers call associates idiots and useless. There is no value placed on the employees or their families. Then at Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve the same people who used to get 40 hours are told work these days but continue to receive 32-35 hours while the managers were working 7-8 hour days. We had one of our best workers quit and the store manager never even acquired why. Everyone there knew that her boss had been verbally assaulting her and other associates for months. The manager has had numerous customer complaints and employee complaints but continues to help run the business in the ground. So when you think it sucks to shop there you should get a load of what it is like to work there. I am glad I left because It really bothered me how people were treated and to this day I will never shop there again. I flip the t.v. commercials when they come on advertising Kmart.

I used to work for kmart and it sucked! Working anywhere sucks, but I tried to be the best worker I could be. I was not trained to use certain equipment properly. My schedule was changed on my days off unbeknownst to me. They screwed up my schedule i don't know how many times. I was called into the office and was told I was not working fast enough. I asked what do you base that assumption on? my supervisor told me because I wasn't working fast enough! I thought what kind of answer is that? With that trailerpark mentality, I wasn't even going to respond to it and quit a month later...

The average definition of "Ghetto" would be K-Mart Stores. And this isn't meant to be a slam on any race, color or creed --- you could apply the same definition to "Trailer trash: K-Mart Stores". Can you imagine the anguish one must feel to be associated with this store, in the conditions they currently operate at? And customer service there? Merely a memory... everything about the stores suck, suck, suck.
It is truly tragic.

I applied for a job at K-mart back when i was a homeless rodeo clown. Fortunately i didn't get the gig because soon after i became a world class magician !

Man, what can I say that anyone else hasnt already said? Its exactly as they explain it! I still work at kmart, how unfortunate. They tell you to work like your "The Flash" but its hard to grip the products because they've all been drenched in rat urine and airdried, which makes a box of cereal feel ashy. I work in a Kmart in Maryland, as Ive said, it has a huge mice problem. I think the entire store is unsanitary and should be shut down. I guess the managers worldwide just suck because I promise you, in the 5 months Ive worked here, at least 8 people from the overnight crew have been fired. Promise. And they were good workers too, with families, some were college students like myself. One chick quit, she was a brave woman, just let him have it! "Im not going to slave over here all night for $8 an hour, Im outta here!" But Im not stupid, gotta find another job first, then, Ima put my foot up my managers ***!

Kmart sucks! Take it from a current employee

i work for kmart in kansas, and let me tell you it's horrible. they hire 30 people at a time and only give them 10-12 hours a week and then they say that us basically full timers can't have more than 30 hours or the hr person will get in trouble with corporate. it's ridiculous. maybe if they didn't hire so many people to work only 10-12 hours a week, they'd have more money in their payroll and be able to schedule 40 hours for those of us who have worked there for a long time and are tired of the bs. the management at my store is ridiculous too, they don't know the store policies, they just do whatever they think corporate wants, and i don't think corporate even knows what it wants. prettylilblonde42@yahoo.com

oh my god, i totally agree with everything everyone is saying. especially prettylilblonde. our hour person does the same exact crap. there's this old woman who's been working at my kmart for 30 years and she's currently getting SIX hours a week. her paychecks are less than $100.. for two weeks! it is so sad. i cannot wait until i find a new job and get the hell out of that shithole. i could rant forever about kmart

I'm not going to murmur or bash kmart but i will give you the honest simple truth. I work at a kmart in Zanesville Ohio (funny story cuz it is right next to walmart i go to wally world on my lunch breaks [on the days that i work long enough to get a lunch break]) it's true i mean my manager is a nice funny guy till it comes down to business if there is something i have a problem with like not making enough hours or not getting good enough training to do the job at hand he bassicly is like well if you don't want to do it that way we can just find another highschool age kid who will (I'm 19 by the way) i mean i work probably on ave 3-4 4 hour shifts and on a good week i get 3 four hour shifts and 1 7 hour shift. Still adding up to about 19 hours on a very very good week some weeks i only work 9 hours i unload truck and they always schedule me to work 4 hours then about a month back they had me working like 3 weeks in a row on 3 hour shifts it take me longer to S*** shower shave get dressed and drive there than it does to do the 3 hour shift i mean really picture that being you. Here is a good example of the product never being there, today we just put up the displayer for Kodak SD card's that where on sale last week i kept having people come to the electronics counter and ask for them and i was like sorry we are sold-out of those (truth be told i had never seen them sold at this particular kmart) but i put the displayer up nobody told me to i just did it cuz i had a second to stop and breath running between sporting goods and layaway (Oh and FYI i was scheduled to unload truck not electronics layaway or sporting goods good example of how short staffed we are on a daily basis) it had no instructions on how to put it together (which is really rare they usually always do at least have instructions in them) then i have no idea where to put the thing so i find a good spot and asked one of the managers if that was the right spot and it was. Then the truck showed up, whilst unloading the truck two tv's showed up that went on sale two days ago that we didn't have in stock yay (they will either sell out in like 3 hours or both go to the only 2 successful rain checks of the week and never be sold to a customer who wants to traditionally walk in and buy it like a normal person expect to.) then i go to go on my 15 minuet break (the only break that i will be getting today since i was working a regular 4 hour shift) and the displayer that i set up was gone (OMG a product that was on sale last week that we didn't have is now where it was supposed to be for a world record of about 2 hours) but as a cookie crumbles the head manager of that store decided he didn't like where it was and asked the lady from layaway to move it (this isn't a big heavy shelf by the way it is like 3 pieces of card board folded and assembled with Kodak SD card hanging on both sides on little black plastic hooks in fact it probably would have taken my manager 30 seconds to move it if he was on his hands and knees pushing it with his nose, but no he decides to call the poor girl working in layaway and tells her to take care of it). Meanwhile back on the ranch that girl who was working in layaway hangs up the phone from talking to the manager and gets back to doing layaway so that she can get the line of people putting their Christmas layaway in. i could go on forever but thats really what it is like on a day to day basis i could go on for a good 3 pages and it wouldn't get boring.

i work at kmart in southern california. I SUCKS! Kmart is so cheap and greedy. I work as a cashier and they have all these rules and guidelines you have to follow while ringing people up. its like they wanna make our lives that much harder! they push you to get people to apply for their extremely high interest sears credit card. there is never enough cashiers on one shift, so WE get slammed because customers complain about the long lines. i literally almost got fired for being up at the service desk on the phone trying to page someone for a price check. they are lazy and never call back, so i have to keep finding SOMEONE to at least do me the favor. one of the managers saw me at the service desk so she called me in her office and yelled at me how i am not supposed to be over there. if i need anything, im supposed to call the service desk girl over to my register and have HER call and get a price check. they are fucken crazy! its super busy, customer service is busy and they really expect her to run back and forth to my register and back just to get me a price check?! so anyways, i got in real trouble for being over there and because the lines were long. 2 cashiers? seriously? they threatened to fire me if they saw me up there again. kmart is just bullshit. they dont care about you. i had a LEEP surgery about 4 weeks ago, i needed two days off. i got only one. then they changed the schedule without notice (as always) and i had none of the days off! i told her and she just told me "find someone to cover you" no one wanted to so i ended up calling saying i wasnt gonna come in. they were mad and gave me some lecture how i have to tell them ahead of time. i was like I DID!!!
people get hurt in our stores all the time. the register's are always freezing up because they are so cheap. we never close early for any holiday. prices are a joke! they are high and nothing ever has the right price. we never have anything in stock. managers talk about customers all the time. their motto is "im management! if i threaten you bout your job and yell at you, you will respect me!"

I work at a Kmart in PA. I have worked many jobs and this is the worst. The whole place is cluttered and unorganized. The ceiling tiles are a brownstained mess and prices never ring up right. I have found ad signs posted that were over a week outdated. We have had a wage freeze for three years, yet they hire new people at a rate of four a week and then cut our hours. We got a new young manager a while back and things have gotten worse. If you are one of her friends you get offered the extra hours and lead positions over experienced employees with seniority. Somen of us reported her to our dm who came to talk to some of us but nothing was done and those of us who complained had hours cut even more. When I thanked her because I was making out better on unemployment my hours went to just over the limit for uc. Don't even get me started on the associate backstabbing of whoever is off that day. KMART SUCKS
