Uhhh, a few points of clarity.

I reached out to CF prior to posting this, and asked him to quit derailing the comments. He did not respond. He keeps posting the same stuff. Thus, this post.

I got quite a few offline emails last week from longtime readers asking "who the hell is this guy hijacking the comments?".

I also touched base with a number of average contributors and other bloggers. They said they'd also noticed a change in the tone and civility of the boards here. Considering how CF has disrupted other blogs, I took all of this into consideration and decided to do something. I don't write this blog for shock value, I write to encourage discussion. I don't feel CF contributes to this.

This site is HARDLY an echo chamber. Period. If you look at the Top 10 on any given week, you'll see plenty of folks who disagree with my on the regular (no need to call names). The difference is, these folks can disagree without demeaning other commenters, posting wordy 300 word dissertations in bold and ALL CAPS!!!!!!, and generally derailing the point of discussion. That is something I have not, and will not ever tolerate.

I close (and always have, not just for CF) the comments on certain posts when I feel the conversation has gone offtrack and/or has been run into the ground. I don't moderate comments, but I get emailed each and every one the moment they are posted, and getting 5 straight comments from the same person, none of which pertain to the issue at hand, gets old really quick.

CF, if you'd like to stick around, cool. Clean up your act, quit taking posts off track, and stop writing tomes when 2 lines would suffice. If not, well, it's been real.

If anyone misses CF's commentary that much, feel free to go and enjoy it on his blog(s).

It does seem like some times there is a "Get on the bus or get run over by it" mentality on this site. That being said, you absolutely should not ban him!

Is this some sort of elite forum only for people a a certain oppinion? Can one only dissagree in a maner approved by head geeks? Slippery slope anyone?

I think if you're interested in squashing CF, giving a whole blog post concerning him makes him more of an issue than you claim him to be.

And yes, he's calmed down for the sake of your post.

Um, I know what it's like to live in an echo chamber/ivory tower, but I think AverageNation knows just how to handle people like him.

We ignore him.

We know how to self correct.

Until CF learns to be relevant to the conversation or rather seek a relevant manner to introduce his point of view, we'll ostracize him; there's no need for you to ban him.

I agree with this statement wholeheartedly! That said, I can see your reasons for considering the ban. I was actually all for it, but reading others' comments seems like CF isn't derailing to the degree that I thought he was. I, like many others, tend to skip his comments.

For what it's worth, I do NOT believe AB is trying to create an echo chamber. There have been many, many times that a healthy debate ensued after commenters disagreed with him. That's cool, and sometimes I learn something new or consider an alternate view point because of something someone else has said. With CF, all I do is roll my eyes and keep it moving right past his posts. And really, doesn't that defeat his whole point?

Well I do think that he takes up way to much space to make his basic opinion. He tends to repeat that opinion on any topic he comments on whether it is relevatn to the discussion or not. I have simply taken to skipping over his comments at this point as I already know what his opinion is and do not need to read a 20 minute dissertation on it EVERY time.

That being said, I think banning is a little harsh. Most people who don't want to read it do like me and simply skip around his comments to others of relevance. I'll also co-sign what Shady wrote as well when it comes to the fact that CF isn't the only one that throws insults here and there.

I get savaged on a regular basis here because I dare to disagree with popular black opinion that Obama is God and that Bush, Cheny and Palin are the single source of all black suffering that ever occured in history. There's nothing toxic or radical about the actual points he brings up. I submit that it's not his points that cause problems, it's his approach (boy, is it ever).

To give him the benefit of the doubt, I really think all he's looking for is for people to engage him honestly on the actual things he's saying. He's unwilling to see that his approach makes this impossible, since people either ignore, flee, or snap back, which only confirms his self-reinforcing superiority. It's a cycle.

Don't project----CF isn't actually "insulting" so much as radiating an impenetrable ivory tower complex that doesn't seem to discriminate. Ignore the ivory tower nonsense and earnestly engage him on the actual issues he raises. The optimistic possibility is that it will change his tune, since he won't be used to non-defensive responses.
