I hear you. But the rhetoric and behavior is also turning off the valued independent voter (note NY-23). With base voters, they can pick off weak Dems. But in elections of significance even during the off-election years, they’ll struggle unless they can win over some independents (and suppress minority voters…wink wink).

Unfortunately, the changing demographics don’t favor the current GOP in the long term. The electorate is becoming more and more brown. The Bush administration poisoned the political waters in the short term. That short term strategy is pretty risky.

I really think Steele needs to shed that Mr. Roper (from 3’s Company) meets Link (from Foxy Brown) persona and to start acting a distinguished gentleman and begin calling for civility among his party members. But that's me.

You gotta look at this both ways: those racist buffoons at the GOP rallies are to some degree their base. You come out publicly and start checkin' fools, and there's a good chance you alienate this guaranteed votes. As much lip service as the GOP pays to "broadening the tent", reality is, if you do a gain/loss analysis, the party is more likely to suffer a greater net loss of racist buffoons than a net gain of minority voters.

As for Steele, this was a terrible job, and he knew it coming in. A guy like JC Watts has too much dignity to put himself in such a dead end situation. Steele, with his MD political career practically over, and his vaunted law career a never-was, didn't have as many options. What else is he gonna do for money? You can't buy Steve Harvey suits with Sizzler money. The guy is just trying to pay the bills, can't say I blame him.

I just wish he'd learn to play the game a bit better.

You know, I had a genuine post-racial feeling with this guy- not empty rhetoric like Obama, seemed to me he was largely focused on issues/campaigns... so what's THIS all about?

I've defended him on my blog more than once and gave him the complete benefit of the doubt, too- although a bit out of his depth, I thought he'd grow into the job- I like his personality, and hey- at least the guy's got a sense of humor.

But after NY-23 I lost most respect for him... that's largely his fault for letting it go down like that-- he's the boss, and it was botched, that's all I know.

Hey Mike, I'm not afraid of you, man- unless you're referring to your ability to quarterback us through the 2010 midterms that are the one last hope for this country.
