Are The McCains Broke!?!?

Of course they aren't, not when dude's wife is worth a cool hunned milli.[1]

But I'm at a loss for words trying to understand just how these folks are literally drenched in moula, but can't cover a simple property tax bill on one of their seven homes.

When you're poor, it can be hard to pay the bills. When you're rich, it's hard to keep track of all the bills that need paying. It's a lesson Cindy McCain learned the hard way when NEWSWEEK raised questions about an overdue property-tax bill on a La Jolla, Calif., property owned by a trust that she oversees. Mrs. McCain is a beer heiress with an estimated $100 million fortune and, along with her husband, she owns at least seven properties, including condos in California and Arizona.

San Diego County officials, it turns out, have been sending out tax notices on the La Jolla property, an oceanfront condo, for four years without receiving a response. County records show the bills, which were mailed to a Phoenix address associated with Mrs. McCain's trust, were returned by the post office. According to a McCain campaign aide, who requested anonymity when discussing a private matter, an elderly aunt of Mrs. McCain's lives in the condo, and the bank that manages the trust has not been receiving tax bills on the property.

Shortly after NEWSWEEK inquired about the matter, the McCain aide e-mailed a receipt dated Friday, June 27, confirming payment by the trust to San Diego County in the amount of $6,744.42. County officials say the trust still owes an additional $1,742 for this year, an amount that is overdue and will go into default July 1. Told of the outstanding $1,742, the aide said: "The trust has paid all bills shown owing as of today and will pay all other bills due."
Overall, this is much ado about nothing, despite what the Huffington Post and others will try and tell you. It seems like little more than an administrative oversight. And if CindyMac isn't bakin' her own cookies, I can damn sure guarantee you somebody else is cutting checks for her. Cause she just balls out like that.

Seriously, CindyMac prolly spends $6,700 on a party weekend trip to the spa. So, this is nothing. But it does put the spectre of Cindy McCain's ludicrous fortune in the news somewhat. I mean, seriously, how heavy are you ballin' when you just happen to forget to pay the tax bill on one of your seven homes?

In a roundabout way, this is why the continued right-wing assault on the Obamas as being elitists sounds so incredibly stupid. Reality is, both Michelle and Barack are only one generation removed from poverty. Barack's grandparents struggled mightily (mainly due to some horrible financial decisions by his grandad) to provide for him. She grew up with both parents, one income, and a brother in a one bedroom apartment. It's widely known that they were both still swimming in over $100k in student loan debt as recently as 2 years ago.

But of course, two Negroes who struggle to improve their lives by getting an education (both on partial academic scholarships might I add) are elitist. Yeah, that adds up to me.

Seriously, could November hurry up and get here or what?

Question: Do you think the Obamas are elitist? How exactly do you define elitist?

What makes this really look bad is it's a place she's maintaining for an elderly relative. Seems like you would stay on top of bills associated with that residence just because you're serving as a caretaker of sorts.

Whatev. This is not a controversy. If she took a truck down to Compton and gave free beer to everybody as a "get out the vote" rally, THAT might be some controversy.

Clinging to guns and religion to make themselves feel better about their economic situation... that's what makes him sound elitist. It's not the cash, AB, it's the attitude.

Even the attitude isn't terribly elitist, but he's gonna need to hit a lot more jumpers before he shakes the label. It's another example of letting the opposition define him, which he's in danger of doing a lot. I hope he gets this part of the campaign under control, because I want to talk issues, not nonsense.

elitist when it comes to people like michelle and barack means
black people who think they are better than white people and that just isn't allowed

cindy and john mccain
are not elitist
they just got
'lucky'

/sarcasm.

owning seven homes really should preclude anyone from trying to come across as an regular joe american.

I'll take the Obama kind of "elitism" any day of the week!

That's why you weren't supposed to learn how to read - so you couldn't get all the good shit without breaking your back.

I am always baffled how these claims can stick without it being true. But if you say it often enough and there's an audience who wants to believe it you can get away with anything...
Obama is not an elitist. In fact I think he might just be one of those rare polticians who actually knows the price of bread and milk. He buys his suits of the rack, his wife wears affordable clothes, they just finished paying of their loans, these are people who live in the real world.
Maybe it's part of the anti-intellectual atmosphere that has always been a part of the US? It's okay to be part of some elite as long as it isn't an academic elite? I think it was Jay Leno or Jon Stewart who said that America is the only country in the world where you can actually brag about getting the un-educated white vote.

The fact that some people will find that joke funny is, well, exactly the sort of elitism that bedevils the Democratic party.

Note to Dems: it's not about how much money you have... that's just your tired-ass standard class warfare angle. It's about what you think of other people and how you treat them. Making fun of ignorant white people is never going to make you look like you identify with the common man.

Hey Spool:

Who is the "common man?"

I've seen elitists. My wife works for an OBGYN. I've seen the elitist doctors and their plastic surgery wives at the Christmas parties.

One of her doctors recently paid *money* for chemotherapy.....for his CAT.

His CAT! Meow.

This same doctor bought an airplane and took flying lessons just so he could take his DOG to Florida when he visits his daughter.

That is one definition of an elitist for me. Too many dollars, not enough cents. Oops, sense.

Obama may be seen as uppity, but the McCains but with 7 houses?
Whoooooo!

I bet you I couldn't even shake the man's hand without him looking at me funny.

I know. I'm not an AMURRRRRR-CAN cause I'm talking shyte about rich folks. :)

I'll take that hit. I don't want to be rich. I want to be comfortable.

Also an elitist is a person who has "arrived" to forget what it's like to be one of the guys. When you come up, bring up someone else...and not just someone who looks like you either.

The Good Ole Boy Network needs to end. That goes for the Hookup Homies too.

I've said it before that people who call Barack an elitist don't think. This is a guy who just finished paying off his student loans along with his wife. Got an over $4 million income for the first time last year while his counterparts for President have been rolling in such dough for years.

But a man married to a trust fund baby (he stresses a pre-nup) isn't? I heard one pundit say folks may grow up working class but may still be elitist when they come into money. Some might but not everyone who comes into money are snooty.

The problem with some of these pundits is that they expect a certain brand of black people. Gwen Ifil wrote it best in a previous Essence article, Jesse Jackson's campaign trail was filled with the typical soul food and fried chicken but Obama's is about granola, water, and typical health fare.

That doesn't make him elitist. I'm black, shop at Whole Foods for produce, drink Starbucks coffee every now and then (cut back due to economy downtown)and once in a blue moon could eat the fried chicken - oh, I just realised based on what I wrote they call my brand the "latte" voters (I'm not).

But whatever . . . I like to see my future President as more than who I can "have a beer with a la Bush." That's why I vote for him in the first place.

Brother Average.. responding to today's topic about Brother Obama status as an elite. I believe that first and foremost that this term elite has been watered down due to America's "elite" is trading off its' history and applying the term to some people who have accumulated some riches in America. Bro O has a job and makes a handsome salary or cabbage. But to be an elite there are prerequsites lacking. Several things one must have/do. 1. Come from old money. Majority of wealth came from the slave trade. 2. Have a position and not a job. 3. There are three things that the elite have not in their conversations- any thing that is undesirable, sex and the "Negro". An example of elites are the De Woolf family of Rhode Island. Since 1700, wealth has been passed on generations to generations. They made rum in R.I sent it to Africa, got slaves, took to Cuba. Had sugar plantations there to send product (sugar) back to R.I. The states of the Northern (slave dependant industries) corridor duplicated this scheme for many centuries to obtain all the wealth along with their Southern partners. That why most of the elite schools (Ivy League)and elite families (Kennedys, Browns) are on the East Coast. To be elite you got to have some ties to that. So that precludes a hell of a lot of people. So when the media use that word "elite".I know its only to make me hopeful.. that its possible to be in that rarefied strata Bill Gates..entertain the elites. If your salary is broadcasted all over the media.. you aint elite. Elite feels entitle. Birth-rights, your family name on buildings, To end, Brother O got the makings for a start, when he becomes president and then his childrens' children will be elite. Now I am wondering if Bob Johnson see himself as elite?

See, the McCains have problems just like any other American. To answer the question, is Barak an elitist? No, in his personality per-se. Yes, in his ideas and liberal thinking. It goes with the territory.
