The Robert Kellys of Pro Sports!?!?

This wasn't a good sports weekend for me. The whole thing started and ended on Friday, when my Washington Wizards were ousted from the playoffs yet again by LeBron James' and the 11 Pips. So, I was just about to declare a full blown sports-fast when a couple of interesting nuggets came to my attention.

Double [||] on that last sentence.

Crooner R. Kelly will finally be going on trial for his alleged trysts with an underaged girl later this month. Seems like a couple of ballers should be accompanying him.

You'll remember Roger "The Rocket" Clemens from his Capitol Hill grilling last year regarding alleged steroid use. This guy who largely dodged the hubris spewn at fellow-doper Barry Bonds, is in some unrelated hot water of his own.

The scandal enveloping Roger Clemens took a sordid turn yesterday when it was alleged that the former MLB pitcher carried on a lengthy affair with an underage country music starlet.

According to a story in the New York Daily News, Clemens was romantically involved for a decade with Nashville B-lister Mindy McCready. Citing unnamed sources, the Daily News claimed the pair met in 1991 when Clemens was a 28-year-old married father of two. McCready was 15 at the time.

Clemens apologized Monday for unspecified mistakes in his personal life but denied having an affair with a 15-year-old.

The Daily News reported last week Clemens had a decade-long relationship with country star Mindy McCready that began when she was 15 and an aspiring singer. The newspaper also linked the star pitcher to former Manhattan bartender Angela Moyer and Paulette Dean Daly, a former wife of champion golfer John Daly.
You gotta love the "non-apologetic" apology. Seriously, if you're not saying specifically what you're apologizing for, then why bother? Or at least that's what AverageSis always nails me with tells me.

If the 15 vs 28 angle of that last story didn't gross you out enough, how's this barely discussed revelation about former NBA player Karl "The Mailman" Malone, also from last week?
Buffalo Bills rookie offensive tackle Demetrius Bell is the son of Malone, but the Mailman had no role in Bell’s success except passing along athletic genes.

The two have had very little contact during Bell’s life. His mother, Gloria Bell, reportedly was only 13 years old and Malone a college sophomore at Louisiana Tech when Demetrius was born. Malone might have served jail time had her family asked the district attorney to file criminal charges.

Bell didn’t even know Malone was his father until after graduating from high school. When they finally met, Malone told the 18-year-old Bell it was too late to be his father, and that Bell would have to “earn his money on his own.”

Malone also fathered twins while in high school. One of them is WNBA star Cheryl Ford. It took years to claim the twins, and now he and his wife, Kay, fully accept them as part of their family.
All together now... "ewwwwwwwww".

I'm trying to figure out what's worse: knocking up a 12 year old while in college, or carrying on with a tween' when you're a grown up family man with kids?

Does it really matter? They're equally dispicable.

I know I'm about to get into some trouble here, but I gotta ask: in both of the above cases, where the hell were the parents? The middle schooler (ick!) that the Mailman "delivered" in surely had a parent or grandma who knew she was hanging around the local college a bit too much. The stage parents of Mindy McCready had to know the Rocket was "blasting off" in their daughter. And for that matter, didn't the teeny bopper in Chi-Town have a Dad or uncle who knew Sylvester Kelly was "bumpin' and grindin'" on their baby girl? Come on now!

I've been entrusted by God with the responsibility of raising a young man whom I pray will make the world a better place and add more to it that he takes away. Part of that responsibility means raising him (intentionally) with the understanding of what's right and what's wrong. Part of the thousands of discussions I'll undoubtedly have to have with him will entail dating women his age or better. Cause we all know older women are where it's at.

Cougars, stand up!!![1] Grrowwwllll!!!!

Older men (or women for that matter) preying on underaged kids is nothing new (Julius Ceasar anyone?), but as long as the sole blame is always placed on the perp, and not the parents of the victim, something tells me we're not going to see any improvement in the future.

Question: It's obviously late, but should Malone and Clemens we somehow held accountable for their actions? How should the parents in each of the above cases be held accountable? If you're the parent of a teen, how do you have the older/younger discussion? Have you thrown up in your mouth yet?

Dad Karl Malone a footnote in Demetrius Bell’s life [Buffalo News]

[1] Yeah, I know I sorta undermined my whole point, but hey, I've just been dying to use the term "Cougar", with all this young dude/older chick marriage stuff going around lately. Seriously, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon? WTH!??!

***DISCLAIMER as a father of three girls I do not condone their behavior in any way*** Kids these days are so sophisticated. The chick RKelly pissed on was a pro. It was definitely NOT her first time doing anything. In his case, both need to go to jail, her for being a prostitute (it is alleged she is on tape accepting money at the beginning of the video) and giving him some and RKelly for getting it. For Karl, who knows whether Karl really knew how old she was. The way children look and act these days, you cant tell who is 13 and who isint. Im not making an excuse for Karl either, just telling it like it is. Karl ought to answer for what he's done and perhaps make a few other atheletes think twice running up in some teenaged hoes.

Don't forget, DeShawn Stevenson pulled a similar stunt and was charged with rape. This ish ain't new or cute.

@ Ciara

Come on homegirl. Yeah, I know DeShawn did that, but do you REALLY have to bring it up now? Isn't the pain of yet another loss to the Cavs enough for me to endure? Arrgghhh!!!

@ daedalus

I mostly agree with you, but these guys are smart enough to know who's of age and who isn't. The minute this girls open their mouths, these men should be able to discern who's in college vs who's in middle school.

It ain't rocket science.

It's apathy. Too many people just don't care what's going on. It's not hard to tell how old someone is...and when in doubt, question them. Do whatever you need to to find out before you have sexual contact. I'm sick of people thinking it's so great to be knocked up by a fool. There are too many damn people in this world as it is. If your child makes a mistake deal with it; consider abortion; if that's not the option file statuatory rape charges if underage and if old enough to consent then take him to court for child support. Too many girls let these guys off the hook- satisfied with a baby until they realize the sacrifice and hard work necessary to take care of them. There are too many parents gloating over being a grandma/grandpa at any age under 25-30. And there are too many people who just turn away from the knowlege of a teen pregnancy because it's not 'their' problem. And I won't even get into the people who don't mind welfare and a life of proverty for the rest of their days...

Some of these parents look the other way because of the paycheck -(think O.J. & Nicole & the car rental franchise). And it's nothing new. 15 years ago, as a hairstylist - I had a 15-year old client who had two(2)kids by a 31-year old, married man. Her mother approved of the 'relationship' because she (mom)got a 'paycheck' under the guise of child support. I blame the men & the parents. Yeah, the girls may be 'fast', but that's why they have parents - to whip their little behinds, and keep them from doing stupid ish.

My question - I guess an attorney needs to answer why doesn't the state file rape charges against the men who impregnate underage girls? I did not know that about Karl Malone, maybe that's why he never won an NBA championship ring.

I don't understand how a person can claim that they don't condone a behavior and in the same sentence make excuses for the perpetrators of it. My daughter is almost 12 and I dress her like a child; when she was 9, I saw a grown man looking at her like she was a centerfold in Maxim. Men can claim they don't know a girl's true age (and I have a friend that did time behind some bs like that) but the fact of the matter is that after giving their time together some thought(he had 18 months to think about it) he says he smelled something funny. Now, I agree it is up to the parents of these girls to pay attention to their daughters but lets not try to imply that a grown man can't tell the difference between a 12 or 13 year old and an adult woman. If they talked to these girls before taking off their clothes it would be obvious. My daughter is of above average intelligence, she's well read, and she's spent most of her life around adults but after a 5 minute conversation with her you can just about guess her age.
And let's not forget that when Mr Malone did this dirt, it wasn't in the last 10 years, so let's not claim that the girls were as developed as they are now. If you consider the time frame it doesn't fit because even when I was a child I was one in maybe 5 in my class that had boobs.
Malone, R Kelly and these other clowns need a wake up call, let me put it in perspective, Mike Vick is locked up for fighting dogs, and R Kelly (and these other fools) are running up in little more than babies- where is the justice in that?
Now, what do we do to fix this? Should I have rushed the dude in the Walmart who was looking at my baby? I have to say the thought crossed my mind(and then when my boyfriend saw it I had to drag HIM out of the store) so do we just start handing out ass whoopings? Sorry, I'm not getting arrested for fighting in the Super Walmart (that's just ghetto) Now, while the smack him now method has it's appeal but again it also carries a charge. I don't have a solution other than being a parent that is aware of your child and their activities. Keep your daughters little girls don't turn them into sexualized Lolitas. And give me one good reason an 11 year old should have a nose ring, tongue ring or belly ring? (I saw this last summer) If we want our children to behave litke children we should treat them as such.

@ Miss GypsyEyes,
I agree totally with your post.

I don't understand this perverted taste for young people. Is sex really all that powerful? Is it so powerful that it'll allow you to make foolish choices that affect your life, the life of the minor, and the lives of those related to the minor?

I know AverageBro, I know. Marcus Vick pulled the same stunt as well. Liquor, young girls and rape.

"The chick RKelly pissed on was a pro. It was definitely NOT her first time doing anything."

I have SUCH a huge problem with this line of reasoning. She was clearly not a virgin, therefore she deserved to be subject to humiliation and statutory rape???

I went to an all-girls high school where the only males many of us saw during the day were some of the teachers. Some of these teachers were attractive. As girls, we often crossed the appropriate boundaries and flirted, subtly and overtly, with these men, regardless of age, regardless of their marital status. Were we being fast? Hell yes! But what disturbs me more than anything is that I can only remember ONE of those teachers ever acting adult enough to tell us that we were acting out of line.

There are teachers who, if given the right opportunity, I KNOW would have slept with me or any of my friends. To my knowledge, that didn't happen. But when do we stop acting like children are soooooo irresistible, so seductive that GROWN ASS MEN don't know where to draw the line?
