The NBA Playoffs are my favorite time of the year for lots of reasons. Not necessarily just for the games themselves either. Reality is, the NBA is one of the few sports that's more fun to talk about than to actually watch. The trades. The player feuds. The Rap Sheets. The off-court baby mama drama. It's all there.
I know the NFL is a cultural phenomenon, and baseball is (Latin) America's game, but the NBA is the bestest of all sports because it's damn near a grown man's soap opera.
Case in point, check out what happened the other night in Atlanta.
There was great debate yesterday about the hand gesture Paul Pierce made late in the Game 3 loss to the Hawks on Saturday after being taunted by Al Horford.Bullcrap!
The Celtics said that when Pierce put his thumb and forefinger into a circle and held the remaining three fingers up, it meant blood, sweat and tears - a symbol used within the team this year.
To the league, it meant $25,000.
That’s how much the Celtics captain was fined for what the NBA called a “menacing gesture.” Sources said the signal was consistent with a gang-related threat, though the Celts debated that strongly.
“Watch what Paul does when he’s introduced. He’s done it for every game,” said Celtics director of basketball operations Danny Ainge. “That’s not anything related to” gangs.
Watch this video and tell me if Paul Pierce is telling his opponent about "blood, sweat, and tears".
Nah, that looks like a gang sign to me. The league hit Pierce with a measly $25,000 fine, which shows that they're a lot more interested in having their banner franchise advance in deep the playoffs than they are about sending messages of peace and non-violence.
The Herald reported yesterday that the Rev. Shaun Harrison of Operation Gang Out was blasting Pierce for making the gesture and demanding that the Celtic forward donate $50,000 to an inner-city group working with at-risk youths. You would think a guy like Pierce, who was nearly stabbed to death in a bar fight that may or may not have been gang related a few years ago would know better.
The hand signal - in which he maneuvered his right index finger and thumb into a circle and raised his three other fingers together - is consistent with a gang sign used by the Piru Blood in Pierce’s hometown of Inglewood, Calif. It’s also similar to the “three’s up” or “B” hand symbol used by Boston teens to represent the Hub.
Pierce has never been linked to gang activity, in Boston nor in California. But questions arose in 2000 after he was stabbed 11 times in a nightclub by associates of Made Men, a local rap crew.
You would be wrong.
Speaking of other subplots, my own Washington Wizards are locked in a mortal battle with the Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers that's turned into a CW/WB/UPN sitcom of it's own.
Game Six looms on Friday, so things are likely to change again by the time you read this post. But the Cliff Notes version is Wizards role player DeShawn Stevenson (yeah, the credit card dude) called King James overrated, Lebron brushes him off by saying responding would be like Jay-Z dissing a one hit wonder like Soulja Boy. Stevenson responds by inviting Soulja Boy to sit courtside at last week's playoff game. Jay-Z responds with a Stevenson diss record that gets played in DC nightclubs, which is the ultimate disrespect to The Wizards, who are now boycotting said nightclubs.
Meanwhile, on the court, Stevenson and Co. edged the Cavs in Cleveland last night, setting up the biggest Game Six in my lifetime, and wouldn't you know it, I can't afford any tickets because I bought that $6 cereal last week.
Watching grown men behave like 8 year olds = Priceless.
I. Love. This. Game.
Question: Do you think Paul Piece was actually flashing gang signs or merely expressing his "blood, sweat, and tears" ethos to his opponent? How darn trivial is this Lebron vs DeShawn feud?

What is this game - "basketball"? - about which you speak?
I'm not into soap opera. When they start officiating the game the way it's supposed to be played - when things called "traveling" and "double dribble" are called, and when dunks are outlawed. Yes! Outlawed! - then I'll pay attention.
Bring back the two handed set shot!
I always thought that gesture was sign language for "ok". Shows how much I know!
I don't think that Pierce was throwing up a gang sign, but I did question my assumption after Game 3 in Atlanta when Al Horford taunted Pierce.
The "menacing gesture" rule is suspect to me as well. Lebron throws up "menacing gestures" all the time. If he doesn't get fined, the rule becomes more of a joke than it already is.
What's so crazy about the whole Deshawn vs. Lebron situation is that allegedly Bron started it. Apparently, Bron said something foul about Stevenson to Drew Gooden, who told Stevenson about it. No one knows what was said, but Stevenson's issue with Bron is past basketball and now personal.
I'm a former DC-Metro Area resident, so when I heard that Love of all places played that song and Damon Jones' ass starting talking reckless at the club, I wished that Caron Butler would have two-pieced Damon's ass.
Geeza! What crap from these guys . I guess they watched one to many BET video's as kids , thanks Bob Johnson.
These guys make me want to dig out my old DR J
and Magic Johnson VHS's .
I wish they'd just act like real men and stop the school yard drama -bunch of big brats.
Meh...shyt, I thought he was Kappa for a quick second.
Menacing gesture no, especially if he's been doing it all year and he's gotten away with it. But, in this league, $25,000 is like having to pay $5 for a temporary ID in high school b/c you forgot your own at home. And frankly for me, $5 in high school wasn't something I was able to just throw around like that.
But, let's be realistic, there are a finite number of gangs in the country, I mean any hand gesture would be bound to be some gang's sign somewhere in this country. Although, I think the coincidence between that one signal and his LA background IS a bit interesting. But seeing as how he's NEVER been linked to any gang activity, I REALLY don't see what the big deal is.
However, these are certainly the times I wax poetic like Juan Williams. I mean, why worry about changing the penalties for cocaine versus crack and focus on telling black folk don't do crack--case solved. I certainly believe this is a perfect example of personal responsibilt that the Truth should know better--I mean read a muh'f----- book or something!

P.S. btw, rev. shaun harrison just sounds like a hustler to me.

Meh...shyt, I thought he was Kappa for a quick second
and if he is a kappa, that is a lazy a@@ diamond.
I think I am going to DEMAND he give me 50,000 too while I'm at it.
Gang sign? Menacing gesture? MENACING?!?
NO. Prove it. It is all about how you interpret the incident. Note, usually many of the NBA fines levied are usually beaten in arbritration.
Referring to Paul Pierce behavior akin to an "8 year old" or "a big brat" is a bit over the top. Yes, they're playing a professional sport but it is also a contact sport. And to them this is simply not just a regular season game it is the playoffs.
I don't know too much about Pierce on or off court behavior but I do know he doesn't have the reputation of Terrell Owens. People lose their cool and act out, he just so happen to be on camera. Your entertainment may be his life-long passion. Don't judge him too quickly.
I'm not trying to be harsh, I'm just saying. The NBA image conscious fines and rules have are really terrible. Eventually "intimidating hairstyles" (read cornrows) will be banned and everyone will get military styled buzz cuts in an effort to project a professional image. Just because they think it may be a gang sign doesn't necessarily make it so.
I think some one should audit the organization Operation Gang Out run by Rev. Shaun Harrison.
@ vee
Yeah, I think it's definitely a "menacing gesture". You've gotta watch the video and checkout the way Pierce is cocking his hand, the fact that he was following Horford to the bench, the look on his face, etc.
He definitely wasn't talkin' bout' no "blood sweat and tears".
That's pretty juvenile if you ask me. Basically, he was mad cause the Hawks were stylin' on him, and he wanted to whoop somebody's ass. Even the kids I coach know better than that.
@ Uppity/Tenth
I'm a Nupe. Paul Pierce is not a Nupe. That's wasn't the Yo he was throwin' up.
Pierce isn't the only athlete who does this. Caron Butler, of the Wizards does the same thing during pregame intros. I think it's asinine, but I've never seen him throw up signs out of anger, so I guess that's not technically menacing.
Ignant as hell? Yeah. Menacing? No.
@ Ciara
You are right. Damon "Donkey from Shrek" Jones is the biggest weedcarrier/scrub in NBA history. He made a living hitting uncontested 3's when Shaq got double teamed. I prolly couldn't done that myself. I can't stand that bama.
