Why didn’t listeners suspect a ratings ploy when Bad Boy, Michael Baisden, took up the gauntlet for the “Jena 6” instead of “Girl 6?”
In the fashion of Jerry Springer, the radio talk show host of “Love, Lust, and Lies” found ratings in racism. And a post-Katrina black America was his target demographic. The issue at the forefront of the black agenda was obvious: equal justice. With a black candidate campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination, Baisden marched in lockstep with the black netroots – hundreds of interlinked blogs and tens of thousands of followers.
ColorofChange.org lead what Rev. Al Sharpton has called an “underground railroad of information.” This non-profit corporation has since collected and distributed over $200,000 to the Jena 6 legal defense. Conversely, The Michael Baisden Foundation raised $40,000, he said at the start of his Nov. 5 broadcast. Copying another best practice from the netroots (the Ron Paul Money Bomb), Baisden announced a way for listeners to donate online in the form of a “Web-A-Thon.” He challenged his audience to raise $1 million in 1 day - Friday, Nov. 9.
As a precursor to unveiling a his Internet-based strategy for out-fundraising competitors, Baisden offered Marcus Jones, the father of Mychal Bell, an open mic to discredit ColorofChange.org. Jones said that “a lot of these online organizations are unknown to the families.” And Baisden claimed to have a letter signed by all the Jena 6 families that implies that ColorOfChange.org is acting against the wishes of the families.
According to a statement posted on their Web site, “We’ve[ColorofChange.org] fielded inquiries from CNN, the Tom Joyner Morning Show, Black America Web, and others, based on Marcus Jones’ allegations–they all concluded the claims were without merit and refused to give him a stage to speak.
“The Jena 6 families are all aware of how we raise money and how we distribute it,” ColorofChange.org said. “We make payments to their attorneys at the families’ sole direction. Within 24 hours of receiving written authorization from the family, along with an invoice from an attorney, we send checks for up to 1/6 of the total amount donated (1/6 for each of the Jena 6 families).” ColorofChange.org also posted a written authorization by Jones as evidence of their relationship.
The letter supposedly signed by the Jena 6 families is false, they said. “One parent who signed the letter says that it made no mention of ColorOfChange whatsoever. Two families say they did not sign the letter at all. They also posted an e-mail sent to Baisden’s team by one of the parents who did not sign the letter.
Although The Baisden Foundation is inextricably linked to its namesake’s for-profit enterprises, Baisden insists that “any insinuations that were made about me wanting to be the sole fundraiser for legal defense is ridiculous,” he said.
Baisen’s just “too tired after [his] radio gig to take on that responsibility, and furthermore, it is impossible,” he said.
Really? Too tired to host the “Enough Is Enough” reception, fundraiser, and concert benefiting his foundation’s Un-Equal Justice Legal Defense Fund on Friday, Nov. 5 at the Hyatt Regency and Sat., Nov.6 at the Atlantic Civic Center in Atlanta, GA? Worth noting, Marcus Jones spoke at these events.
Baisden’s crusade as an activist proved to be nothing more than a publicity stunt yet again. Take his apology to ColorofChange.org as case in point. In “A Response to Color of Change” posted in an online forum on Nov.9 at 2:35 p.m. - hours before reception doors opened for his charity fundraiser - Baisden said:
I am relieved to have put this behind us so that both our organizations can get back to the business of helping people. There is nothing wrong with having disagreements, as long as you love people enough to work it out, sooner rather than later. As activists, black bloggers serve as watchdogs over more traditional community mediums. Perhaps auditing The Michael Baisden Foundation will spotlight his business practices.
Baisden’s Web-A-Thon has raised approximately $19,000 — 1% of its target amount.

It's pretty clear to me that Marcus Jones is unhappy about not getting any Jena 6 money himself, and Baisden is using this to further his own name/reputation.
Typical house nicca nonsense.
yeah, this dude has always struck me as shady since he was writing all those "why men cheat" type books.
ladies, I sure hope ya'll havent spent hard earned money on this guy's books and "lectures". what a damn hustler. what a damn shame.
pick your battlers wisely, my people.
I actually did give money to the Baisden campaign. I feel very, very used right now.
watch out there, ya'll- you might catch an "e-beatdown" from the mingle city disciples...
chicagotribune.com reported on Nov. 11, that "Michael Baisden, a nationally syndicated black radio host who is leading a major fundraising drive on behalf of the Jena 6, has declined to reveal how much he has collected. Attorneys for the first defendant to go to trial, Mychal Bell, say they have yet to receive any money from him." On his Nov. 5 broadcast, Baisden stated that he has raised a reported "40K."
Anyone whose broadcast consists of exploring topics such as "Miiiin who cheat"& other sorts of Sambo drivel revolving around sex,is automatically discredited when the time for speaking out comes around.
Your label "drive-by" activism speaks much louder than the words they appear to be.One day driving home from work I listened to him attempt to discredit the "read a book" lil john satire video..
He needs to be called out for what he is....
I believe he was given the wrong information by Mychal Bell's father. He was incorrect as Mike should have checked his story before just letting Mr. Jones have the floor and speak. He is guilty of not doing his homework. I don't believe that he will not do right by the monies received. I may not agree with everything that he does...but in sometime listening to his show.. I don't think he is using the money for personal gain. Just my thoughts.
I like that Micheal Basiden attempts to spot light forms of unequal justice. However, I do not think he is qualified to be the sole voice of the black community. Most of the time he does not come across as completly sincere but he is great at hyping up the crowd which is needed. But after the crowd is hyped then a more informed and credible leadership is needed ( that does not include Jesse and Al). As a matter of fact I am not sure who would be great canidate for the job. We just need to be careful about our donations and mindful about the distribution of funds.
Read and research PEOPLE.. Michael Baisden put together a foundation out of support for not just Jena 6, but for all of those needing legal assistance. He did no wrong. And you can log onto his weblink and get ANY information needed in regards to where the money is going..
...sayeth the mingle city disciple.
Why are we knocking this brother? At least he is trying to do something. That is more than a lot of people these days. He may not be 100% correct in his methods but he is putting forth an effort. I think his heart is in the right place. So if anyone can do better to improve upon Michael Baisden's efforts and further the movement along go right ahead. Step up!!
It is great to hear that Color of Change is ligitimate and I believe that Micheal bainsden is ligit also. But he is not an activist or a truely politically/policy saavy person. A previous blogger stated that someone needs to step up, but right now who is that person. The people in the black community with voices are entertainers. P Diddy and vote or die, M. Bainsden, Al Sharpton. We don't have a unified voice or a messenger that can create real change. Oprah isn't an activist either but people would vote for her in a second. Thats because this country and our people are lacking in leadership. We need Maxine Waters to get more air play!!
I don't think Black America is lacking in "leadership" any more than any other race. Black preachers "lead" every Sunday. Black politicians do their part. Heck, even the Black blogosphere contributes. The problem is, the media/mainstream America chooses to keep anointing certain flawed individuals as unnecesary spokespersons for the entire race. Baisden is just the lastest such example, and while I don't think he is guilty of bad intentions with the money, he is guilty of not properly checking facts before putting Marcus Jones in front of a mic to discredit an organization that he had already taken money from.
Question: why do we all insist that black America needs a leader/savior? Why don't we all just try to lead our own lives and families instead? Life would be so much simpler.
Re: Leadership
Transparency is a first step in building trust but is insufficient in earning credibility. A system of checks and balances is required. When a public personality prioritizes attack politics above fact-checking (because there is more currency in ratings), he is accountable for the impact his words have socially and politically. Our responsibility to move beyond scandal and question organizational values at the rock bottom of corruption.
A downward rising model of leadership maybe most effective, which speaks to the potential power of the netroots.
Mich"I love the white folks"Biasden and his boy George"Amos and Andy God Son"Willborn are nasty dirty old men.Black women this man had a day set aside for other women of different races, and what you do ,let his but slide and you continue to kiss his butt.Biasden,Joyner,Harvey,Smiley,Parr is about making money not about helping our people.Tom is the better host of all them fools.
