Like many of you, I've been locked into the cable news accounts of the SuccessTech school shooting yesterday in Cleveland. Thank God nobody was seriously injured, except of course for the shooter, Asa Coon, who took his own life.
Curiously, no news coverage (at least as of this morning) had shown a photo of the 14 year old shooter. Most of what I've seen was interviews with other students at the, which by all accounts seemed to be your typical inner city mostly black school. Part of me also wondered to a degree, why there was so much media attention for an incident that didn't really produce any casualties. It seems in this post-Virginia Tech world, any shooting, even at black schools (see the Del State incident a few weeks ago), is newsworthy.
Still, I wondered why they would go through the trouble of identifying the shooter, yet not show his photo. It couldn't possibly be because he's a minor. After all, some of the victims were also minors, yet their faces were all over the screen. And even if he is a minor, he is dead, so the usual media rules need not necessarily apply.
Turns out this kid is white.
Some of the kids called him Jack Black, the loud, chubby, long-haired actor in the movie "School of Rock."That being the case, I wonder if the media is shying away from photographic identification (thus far) because of the underlying racial element in this case. While Coon obviously can't be charged with a crime (he's dead), wouldn't this to some degree be considered a hate crime of sorts? I already smell Rebb'n Al's private jet warming up.
He could be loud sometimes, all right, and his appearance cried for attention: his shock of wavy brown hair, his fingernails painted black, the dog collar around his neck, his faded rock concert T-shirts under a trench coat.
But there was another Asa Coon, an Asa Coon far more menacing than the loopy kid with the unkempt hair and faux Gothic look.
The kid apparently had been showing signs of such potential aggression for weeks. He had been suspended from school. He had been getting his ass kicked on the regular (with a name like Asa Coon, this ain't much of a surprise). He had a history of domestic violence at home. He practically warned other students that he was going to do this. Why wasn't something done earlier to prevent such a thing?
I don't really know how else to read the coverage of this one for now, but stay tuned. We'll see what happens as this story develops.

This is nothing more than a case of neglect and a refusal of action on the school administration's parts. As mentioned in an interview by one victim this morning on one of those over-extended news shows, several students voiced their concerns to the principal who chose to dismiss the threats and behavior because she was "too busy". Also it has been revealed that this apparently disturbed young man served time in both a juvenile detention center and a mental health facility, yet was still able to walk through metal detectors, past administrative offices, into the school, with a duffel bag, a grudge, and the angry school-shooter giveawayof a Marilyn Manson T-shirt, ALL the while he was not even supposed to be on suspension. How many red flags, alerts, signals, and indications were in place for this to be avoided? It makes not one iota of sense in this Post-Columbine/Va Tech era that any one, adults or students, would not take such threats seriously. Especially black folks; we already know and have in plain sight and evidence how crazy some of the uhhh "others" can be, and this dude is just blown off? Best believe heads will roll, starting with the passive principal down to the security (or the lack thereof). Thank God noone else was seriously injured or killed, or we might be looking at one of the most avoidable and preventable tragedies of our time.
Damned shame.
I had a feeling that he was white due to the same reasoning... plus, I have yet heard of a mass school shooting held by a black kid yet (the DC Sniper kind of killed the stereotype.)

As a photojournalist, the case often is that reclusive and withdrawn teens do not participate in school activities and clubs. Therefore, our first resource (school yearbooks) fail to produce publishable reprints. And it is inappropriate to release such without family permission. The Cleveland Plain has obtained the first pictures through Associated Press: http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2007/10/photos_of_asa_coon.html
It never occured to me that the shooter was anything other than a White male. While there are always exceptions, profiles exist for a reason. (Let's call them statistical profiles, as opposed to racial profiles.)
Besides, the DC Snipers and Wayne Williams (Atlanta Child Murders) were technically serial killers, not spree killers, as what was attempted in this case.
Despite the high proportion of Blacks employed by the U.S. Postal Service, have any of these ever "gone postal"? (I don't know the answer, but I don't recall having seen it.)
On its surface, this case doesn't appear to have been a hate crime, but rather another case of a White male social outcast who passes the tipping point and turns the tables on the bullies, who in this case happened to have been Black.
Were The Cleveland School Shootings a Hate Crime? I don't know. Were the times he got beat up by black kids because he was white hate crimes?
At least one of the people he shot, a teacher, and the main target, was white.
Anon: judging my this definition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_crime), I would say that the kids beating up Coon doesn't constitute a hate crime, whereas the school shooting does.
But I get where you're coming from. Point taken.
